A selecta is the one who chooses the records. The word comes out of Jamaican soundsystem culture — where the selecta picks and spins the tunes, and the deejay is the one chatting on the mic over them. It travelled with the soundsystems: from Kingston lawns to Notting Hill, to the blues dances and pirate radio of London, into jungle, garage, grime and everything after.
Calling someone a top selecta is a compliment about taste and knowledge, not technique. It means they know the tunes — the deep cuts, the right record for the moment, the history behind the sound. That's the whole idea of this game: not how fast you can click, but how much of the music you actually know.
So — think you're a top selecta? Prove it.
